She first took part in her first FIFA Women's World Cup in 2011. In the years 2015 and 2019 her contribution to players from the U.S. Women's World Cup winning team achieve consecutive championships. In 2018, Rapinoe was appointed cocaptain. Rapinoe was the one who had two points for the United States in the 4-3 win over Australia during the bronze Olympic medal game at Tokyo in 2020 due to the COVID-19 epidemic which Japan was forced to postpone until 2021 as a result of this pandemic, also was awarded the gold medal at Tokyo in the year 2016.
